Behind the Design: Crafting Giada DeLaurentiis’ Joliet Restaurant Experience

At Barker Nestor, our imaginative process and integrated approach often lead us to custom design solutions that elevate the guest experience while navigating the practical challenges of procurement and construction. The upcoming Giada DeLaurentiis restaurant in Joliet is a perfect example of how collaboration, creativity, and flexibility come together to deliver a truly bespoke space.

From the moment guests walk through the doors, every detail has been carefully considered to reflect Giada’s signature Italian warmth and modern elegance. Here’s a look at three custom design features that brought this vision to life:

A Fireplace Mantle with Botanical Beauty

In the main dining room, we wanted to create an elegant focal point that tied fresh ingredients into the space. Our initial vision was a plaster relief of a basil flower, a nod to Giada’s love of fresh ingredients. However, fire code restrictions prevented the use of plaster. The solution? A fire-resistant acrylic, CNC-cut and layered to perfectly capture the original design intent, allowing the mantle to make a statement safely and beautifully.

A Host Stand That Sets the Tone

First impressions matter, and we fell in love with a graphic Italian-inspired pattern we wanted to feature on the host stand. When we discovered the pattern only existed on fabric—unsuitable for the high-traffic area—we partnered with ELM Surfaces to replicate the look on a durable resin mosaic tile. The result is a striking, functional piece that welcomes guests with Italian flair.

An Entrance That Says “Benvenuto”

Giada’s restaurants are known for their warm welcome, and we wanted this location to carry on that tradition. We collaborated with Daltile to design a custom tile inlay featuring the word “Benvenuto.” A sunburst field of black and white mosaic tiles, inlaid with water-jet cut lettering and a refined border, greets guests as they step inside, setting the tone for the experience ahead. Buon appetito!

Through close collaboration with our partners, creative problem-solving, and an eye for custom detail, Barker Nestor was able to bring Giada’s vision for her Joliet restaurant to life. Every challenge along the way became an opportunity to craft a more thoughtful, bespoke space that embodies the heart of Italian hospitality.
